To promote a newsletter on X, post one idea from each edition at a time: short posts, threads, or long posts if you have X Premium, which allows up to 25,000 characters. Keep the subscribe link out of the post and put it in a reply, because X limits the reach of posts with an outside link, and Elon Musk advised exactly that. Post about five times a week for 30 days, and mention people in the first 280 characters so they are notified. I build Quibr, which writes X posts from each edition and posts the link as a reply.
Disclosure: I am Vicente Évora, the founder of Quibr, which writes X posts from each newsletter edition and posts the link as a reply. X’s rules here come from its help pages, read on 27 October 2026.
What should you post on X to promote a newsletter?
Ideas, one at a time. X rewards posts people stop for, and a link to “my new issue” is not one. Take the sharpest sentence, the most useful list or the best story from the edition and make it a post that works without the edition.
Three shapes for a post on X, from X’s help pages, read 27 October 2026
Shape
Length
Good for
Needs
A post
Up to 280 characters
One sharp idea or line
Nothing
A thread
Several posts in a row
A whole section, step by step
Nothing
A long post
Up to 25,000 characters
A whole section in one post
An X subscription such as Premium
Whichever shape you pick, the first line does the work. It has to make people want to read on, like the first post of a thread.
Should you use threads or long posts on X?
Both work. Long posts are one post, so they are easier to read and share. X’s help says they need a subscription, and lists two limits.
No drafts or scheduling on web. X’s own web app cannot save a long post as a draft or schedule it. A tool that posts through X’s API can.
Mentions after 280 characters do not notify. If you name someone, do it near the top.
Quibr asks X whether your account has a subscription. With one, the composer lets you write and schedule posts over 280 characters. Without one, it stops at 280, because X refuses longer posts from that account.
Where should your newsletter link go on X?
In a reply to your post. Social Media Today reports that X limits the reach of posts with an outside link, and quotes Musk advising people to put the link in the reply. X tested an easier way to open links on iOS in October 2025, but has not said the limit is gone.
“Just write a description in the main post and put the link in the reply.”
Quibr does this by default on X: the post goes out without the link, and the call to action follows as a reply a minute or two later. The comparison across platforms is in where to put your newsletter link.
Does X hold back Substack links?
Substack links are outside links, so they fall under X’s link limit like any other. Social Media Today also reports that X has been found to throttle links to certain publications. Keep the post link-free and reply with your Substack address.
How often should you post on X?
About five times a week for at least 30 days, as Newsletter Operator suggests. If an edition holds more ideas, post more often, and spread the posts across the week rather than in one burst.
In my own test run, one edition became 20 posts for X, including a thread. That was the top of what my edition could hold, and Quibr warns when you ask for that many.

How does Quibr post to X?
It reads each new edition from your feed and writes X posts from it, against an X persona built from posts you have already published.
It writes short posts and a thread from each edition. In the composer, you can also write long posts if your account has an X subscription.
It posts the call to action as a reply a minute or two after the post, and counts clicks for each placement.
It can post to your timeline or to one of your X Communities, and copy your X posts to Threads.
Post ideas from each edition as posts, threads or long posts, keep the link out of the post, and reply to it with your Substack address. X limits the reach of posts with outside links.
How long can a post on X be?
280 characters, or up to 25,000 for a long post if you have an X subscription such as Premium.
Can I schedule a long post on X?
Not in X’s own web app, which cannot schedule or save long posts as drafts. A tool that posts through X’s API can schedule them, as Quibr does for accounts with a subscription.
Does X limit posts with links?
Yes, according to Social Media Today. Musk advised writing the description in the post and putting the link in the reply.
How often should I post on X to grow a newsletter?
About five times a week for at least 30 days, according to Newsletter Operator. More is fine if each post has a real idea in it.
What changed since the last update?

Vicente writes Notes to 10K MRR, a weekly build-in-public newsletter on beehiiv, alongside university and a part-time job. Every edition went out on time, and the social posts that were supposed to follow it never did.
He built Quibr to write those posts for him. It started as an idea on 26 November 2024, and the first version shipped in January 2025. Quibr is built and run by one person, and Vicente answers support email himself.
